Yet Another Low Point
Surely you’ve heard of the Trumpists’ latest disgrace — flouting rules at Arlington National Cemetery prohibiting use of that space for political purposes, and, worse (?) manhandling the female staffer who tried to enforce the rules, then insulting her (saying she had been “suffering from a mental health episode”). Yeah, the same guy who wouldn’t visit the WW I cemetery because they were “suckers and losers” and he might muss up his hair in the weather conditions.
Worst of all, perhaps, is that the violated cemetery staffer said she would not be pressing charges because she feared retaliation at the hands of Trump’s mobsters.
What more do you need to know about the MAGA movement? Violent thugs…playground bullies.
One After Another, Prominent Republicans Endorse Harris
We saw five of them at the DNC a couple of weeks ago…the trend continues…Make sure your Republican relatives and friends are aware of this. Many need “permission” to abandon their party. These folks extend it.
Conservative Republican endorses Harris, calls Trump a threat to democracy
Retired federal appeals court Judge J. Michael Luttig, a prominent conservative legal scholar put on the bench by President George H.W. Bush, is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump, whose candidacy he describes as an existential threat to American democracy.
It will be the first time Luttig, a veteran of two Republican administrations, has voted for a Democrat.
“In the presidential election of 2024 there is only one political party and one candidate for the presidency that can claim the mantle of defender and protector of America’s Democracy, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law. As a result, I will unhesitatingly vote for the Democratic Party’s candidate for the Presidency of the United States, Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.”
White House lawyers who advised Reagan, Bush endorse Harris over Trump in 2024 showdown
A dozen Republican White House lawyers who served in the administrations of then-Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in her race against GOP nominee former President Donald Trump.
"We endorse Kamala Harris and support her election as President because we believe that returning former President Trump to office would threaten American democracy and undermine the rule of law in our country," the lawyers wrote in a letter that the signatories shared first with Fox News Digital.
Hundreds of former Bush, McCain and Romney staffers endorse Harris
More than 200 Republicans who worked for President George W. Bush, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) or the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, warning in a letter that a second Trump presidency “will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions.”

IVF for All?
Trump has gone off the rails more than usual since Kamala Harris changed the dynamic of the presidential contest, flailing about with his misogynistic and racist attacks, lies, and insults (isn’t it depressing that this stuff appeals to at least 30% of our countrymen?). Suddenly he’s not sure whether he’s proud of his role in overturning Roe v. Wade (once a bragging point for him) or not…and lately this flip-flopping has led to his sudden championing of in vitro fertilization for any couple who feel the need for it. Trump would either have the government pay for it or mandate that private insurance pay for it. IVF costs about $15,000 to $30,000 for a single IVF cycle—defined as ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval and embryo transfer—can range from $15,000 to $30,000, depending on the center and the patient’s individual medication needs.1
So, the former president and his party — who so adamantly opposed and tried to repeal the Affordable Care Act which has brought basic healthcare coverage to millions who would otherwise never have it — is now willing to open the coffers for IVF?
Doesn’t quite sound right, on a lot of levels.
And finally, here’s a repost of a segment from one of my early posts commenting on the whitewashing of history (Reflections on Juneteenth....and other history we never learned) The segment is apropos as you read this on Labor Day…
Quashing Workers’ Rights and the Labor Movement. Nor did my history classes discuss events such as “The Battle of Blair Mountain,” which took place in the summer of 1921 and “…saw 10,000 West Virginia coal miners march in protest of perilous work conditions, squalid housing and low wages, among other grievances. They set out from the small hamlet of Marmet, with the goal of advancing upon Mingo County, a few days’ travels away to meet the coal companies on their own turf and demand redress. They would not reach their goal; the marchers instead faced opposition from deputized townspeople and businesspeople who opposed their union organizing, and more importantly, from local and federal law enforcement that brutally shut down the burgeoning movement.” A couple of decades later (1937) and hundreds of miles away West Virginia native Walter Reuther and other United Auto Workers union activists were severely beaten by Henry Ford’s thugs for trying to hand out union literature. I DO recall learning about this event and other labor struggles to achieve a better life for workers, and that government was usually on the side of corporate interests in those struggles. Not sure if I learned that in history classes, or on my own.
